A Florida judge has dismissed the case against former President Donald Trump regarding his handling of classified documents. Trump faced 37 felony counts related to special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation into the possession of classified materials at Mar-a-Lago, including charges of willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements.
U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon ruled that Smith’s appointment violated the Appointments Clause of the U.S. Constitution. “The Superseding Indictment is DISMISSED because Special Counsel Smith’s appointment violates the Appointments Clause,” Cannon wrote.
Trump expressed his satisfaction with the ruling, stating it had significant implications for other cases and praised the judge’s decision. Smith may appeal the ruling.
