Sen. Joe Manchin, I-W.Va., has joined a growing number of Democrats calling for President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential race. Manchin expressed his concern with a “heavy heart” after Biden’s poor performance in the June debate sparked mounting calls for his withdrawal.
In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Manchin, who left the Democratic Party in May but still caucuses with them, stated that he initially believed Biden needed time to evaluate his decision. However, he noted that feedback from colleagues and the donor class has shifted towards seeking a new direction.
Manchin suggested that Biden stepping down would allow him to address key issues and demonstrate an orderly transfer of power, enhancing his legacy as a patriotic American. Despite the turmoil, Biden has announced plans to resume campaigning next week.
